SUMMARY:This Changing World: London’s Architecture in the Twentieth Century
DESCRIPTION:Twentieth-century London was characterised by profound change as the emergence of new superpower nations\, world wars\, and the end of empire caused profound shifts in the nation’s social\, economic and political status. Architects played a significant role in responding to these changes and stepped up to the challenge of transforming a Victorian city into a global city. Organised thematically\, this course will follow architects across the century and explore how they developed new building types and new architectural styles fit for a modern nation.

SUMMARY:The Painted Garden
DESCRIPTION:This course will explore the mutually enriching intersection between art and the garden. Often seen as works of art in and of themselves\, great gardens have always inspired and delighted those who make and appreciate them.  Crossing time periods and cultures\, we will explore some of the finest examples of actual gardens full of art and of art full of gardens. We will also consider why artists have for centuries chosen gardens and plants as subject matter for fine paintings and decorative art objects.

SUMMARY:The Medici of Florence: The Art of Politics\, Power & Propaganda in the Renaissance
DESCRIPTION:The Early Medici and Their Artists: Church & Monastery Commissions \nThe Medici family\, led by Cosimo de’ Medici in the early 1400s\, wielded immense economic and political power in Florence. Their patronage extended across architecture\, sculpture\, painting\, and humanist scholarship that defined Renaissance culture. For the Medici\, art was more than ornamentation; it was a vital instrument for expressing civic pride\, religious devotion\, and the legitimacy of their rule. Cosimo de’ Medici\, in particular\, cultivated relationships with artists whose works adorned both private spaces and public institutions. The Medici’s support was not limited to secular commissions; they played a crucial role in sponsoring religious art\, which in turn reinforced their reputation as pious Christians and benefactors of the city. \n  \nThe Medici in this period: \nGiovanni di Bicci de’ Medici (1360 – 1429)\, ruler of Florence from 1421 – 1429 \nCosimo di Giovanni de’ Medici (1389 – 1464)

SUMMARY:Connoisseurship: The Art of Recognising a Masterpiece
DESCRIPTION:How do we determine which artist might have painted what\, hundreds of years ago? The old documents are rarely specific\, and not always trustworthy\, even when we still have them\, which in most cases we don’t. So\, we usually have to reason it out\, by trusting our eyes; or\, to be more precise\, by trusting the eyes of some esteemed expert. \n  \nThis course explores connoisseurship – that is\, the process of recognising artists’ own handiwork – from every aspect\, including its continually changing role in the practice of art history\, and some infamous controversies that have arisen around it.

SUMMARY:Strange Beauty – Expressionism and Germany’s Modernisms
DESCRIPTION:‘Germanness’ and nationalism collided with modern movements and cosmopolitanism in the art of Germany from the mid-nineteenth century onwards.  Berlin’s Nationalgalerie\, founded in 1861 collected only contemporary art unlike other similar European institutions. It\, too\, became a site of contested ideas about art and the spirit of nationhood.  We will focus on these themes through the work of significant artists and artist collectives emerging in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries\, notably the officially-celebrated Adolphe von Menzel\, the expressionism of the freedom-loving artists of Die Brücke\, the under-explored art of Paula Modersohn-Becker and socialist revolutionary Käthe Kollwitz.

SUMMARY:Professional\, Public\, Private
DESCRIPTION:Bankruptcy\, murder\, addiction or prosperity\, monastic serenity and chess – for better or worse\, the personal experience of the artist is reflected in their art. Taking a variety of artists\, we will look first at their lives\, from the monastery of Fra Angelico to the mental asylum of Richard Dadd or the decadence of Montmartre for Toulouse Lautrec\, before examining their work and the way it reflects their experience.

SUMMARY:The Ornament of London’s Buildings
DESCRIPTION:There are many strange figures over our heads: gods\, monsters\, great bursts of elaborate foliage. This course will introduce the (usually) sculpted embellishments of the buildings of London\, some great and celebrated\, others obscure. We will attempt to understand both what is represented and why. The lectures are arranged roughly chronologically\, but the ancient heritage of the designs and figures used will be a repeating feature\, and Gothic will not appear until the third talk when its appearance as a revival takes place. These – doubtless expensive and carefully considered – ornaments pass mostly unseen by 21st century Londoners and the aim of the course is to encourage attendees to look up\, admire and enjoy with greater understanding.

SUMMARY:Art Deco
DESCRIPTION:Art Deco was arguably the most distinctive and elegant of international\, inter-war styles\, one which embraced all forms of design\, from the fine and decorative arts to fashion\, film\, photography\, transport and product design. This course will explore new directions in fine art and painting\, the rise of the machine aesthetic and interest in new materials like aluminium\, Bakelite and chrome as well as the cultural changes which led to the new ideas about personal adornment and interior design. Although it began as a luxury style\, Art Deco is also marked by a clear element of modernity\, reflecting the plurality of the contemporary world at the beginning of a new century. This course examines key figures such as Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann\, Jean-Michel Frank\, Eileen Gray\, Paul Poiret\, Sonia Delaunay and Rene Lalique\, and themes including International Exhibitions\, “skyscrapers”\, “exoticism”\, performance and the development of streamlining.

SUMMARY:Greek Myths and The Human Condition: Symbols and Philosophical Truths
DESCRIPTION:Greek myths have profoundly influenced Western thought and continue to shape our worldview even today. These myths are all around us\, woven into culture\, language\, and art—often without our conscious awareness. In this course\, we will explore why these ancient stories are much more than simple tales. Through their rich symbolic language\, they reveal deep philosophical truths and vividly illustrate the human condition. We will examine the allegorical meanings behind these myths and uncover how they reflect timeless aspects of human nature\, emotions\, and experiences\, offering insights that remain relevant across centuries.
